Computer Jobs in Israel (CJI) - 1997 Annual Salary Survey ========================================================= This document is located on the CJI web site at: http://www.jr.co.il/cji This document may be copied/distributed in its entirety as long as it is not changed in any way. I (Jacob Richman - CJI editor) am not a statistician and I do not work for any recruiting firm. The information provided below is for general reference. Do not ask me to talk to your boss about a salary raise - it may work out the wrong way :-) Comments/suggestions can be sent to: jrichman@jr.co.il --------------------------------------------------------------------- The salary form was emailed to CJI subscribers only. The survey ran from February 4, 1997 through February 13, 1997 Email was used to insure no duplicate entries and that the people filling it out were from Israel. The amount of work involved in formating 367 emails has convinced me that next year the survey will be web based. The positions stated are in Israel. Number of vaild forms returned: 367 Census information based on 367 responses: Native Language: Russian=196 English=103 Hebrew=45 Other = 23 City: Tel-Aviv=85 Jerusalem=72 Haifa=42 Other=50 Herzliya=24 Petach Tikva= 23 Rehovot=11 Lod=21 Or-Yehuda=13 Ramat Gan=15 Givat Shmuel = 6 Migdal HaEmek = 5 Degree: 329 (of which 195 in computer science) Non-degree: 36 NA: 2 Age: 18-29 = 142 30-39 = 163 40-50 = 50 50+ = 11 NA: 1 Experience: <1 YR = 24 1-2 YR = 53 3-5 YR = 95 6-9 YR = 72 10+ YR = 119 NA = 4 Company Car: 41 Bus Fare: 120 (also added those that get company rides via van service) Keren Hishtalmut (savings plan): 296 Bituach Menahalim (manager's insurance): 301 Subsidized Lunch: 257 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This year there were new programmers earning more then some people with over 10 years of experience. I did not see any salary correlation with years of exp. for programming positions (at least in this survey). Needless to say, to become a group leader or project manager you need experience. In my opinion, after 2-3 years of experience I would venture to say that your knowledge and type of experience is what is valued the most. It is my guess (based on the few numbers I have seen) that programmers out of school, with a degree, can start between 6000 and 9000 shekels per month (Gross - Bruto). In my opinion it seems that Keren Hishtalmut and Bituach Menahalim are now standard fare for the computer industry. Note that both can add 15-20 percent to a person's gross salary. Subsidized lunch is also becoming standard fare. All three ARE NOT taken into account in the salary numbers below. (they are extra's you can figure out and add in yourself). I DID NOT add in any value to cars or bus pass or van pickup. (I put the number of cars near each position) Note that several non-manager workers have company cars. Cars are usually given to those in high positions or sales/marketing people. Exceptions may be people who live far from the company location. If you are comparing this year's survey to last year (available on the CJI web site) note that the dollar exchange rate was different and company cars and bus fare are not inside the salaries this year. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To the survey: Dollar rate: 3.30 Shekels Salaries are Monthly Bruto (Gross before taxes) Positions that had less then 5 responses were not used. 34 positions were on the form. Survey results include 18 positions. From the 367 responses 327 were included in the survey below. Due to the large number of Native Russians responding, I broke down 3 of the programming positions to Russian (R) and non-Russian (NR). It seems that Russian olim, during their first years in Israel, are paid lower then others. In my opinion only: this could be due to the language barrier and the non-western approach to salary negotiations. Do not flame me for this, it is just an opinion. I did not see any major differences in the higher positions. Due to the large spread between the low and the high I decided to use the median instead of the average salary. I think this gives a clearer picture of the market. If the low and high are out of sync with the rest of the numbers, I listed the 2-3 lowest / highest numbers on the bottom of the survey. Positions with under 10 responses are probably not sufficient to get a good picture.....but I listed them anyway (for the curious). --------------------------------------------------------------------- Position Name Responses Low High Median Car ============= ========= ==== ===== ======= === Programmer (R) 41 3915 * 15700 9500 1 Programmer (NR) 23 4500 * 30000 12400 0 Real Time PRG (R) 38 6000 15500 10000 1 Real Time PRG (NR) 10 6500 13200 11000 0 Windows PRG (R) 33 6000 17000 10000 1 Windows PRG (NR) 6 5500 12500 10750 0 Systems PRG 12 7500 15000 10000 1 Project Leader 28 9500 18000 14050 9 Systems Analyst 6 8100 17000 10250 0 Prog.
